I just watched the first episode of the 4th season. It was beyond words. Honestly, it was amazing, and what I expected. I don't want to give anything away, but it was most certainly worth the wait. It was written well, and it started as all episodes do, with humor, and lightness, and then it breaks your heart to absolute pieces by the end.
Applying Sherlock's view of things, the concept is being stretched too far; e.g., Sherlock being emotional and caring about Mary/baby. Initial storyline of 6 Thatchers was promising, but fell apart upon entering the denouement portion and the balance of the episode. I hope this isn't representative of a struggle for interesting and thorough storylines during season four.
Not the worst television I've seen, but very disappointing. Sherlock's "character development", though mildly funny, is wildly out of character (I mean tweeting? c'mon!) Not the cold,calculating, machine/ man-child we've come to love. The first episode played out far too much like a soap opera. I have high hopes that Gatiss (and other writers) will steer the show in a better direction. Don't get me wrong, I'm not opposed to change, and much of the episode was really enjoyable, but hopefully future episodes don't over-egg the character development pudding.
Leaps about in time and geography. I lost track of the number of subplots which just seemed to be thrown in to make fans 'ooh' and 'ahh' over Sherbach's cleverness. Mary is not very charismatic for the amount she is expected to carry this episode. Rather disappointed after waiting over a year!
Advice = hold off until the price drops from $4.99.
episode 1 was superior cinema. did not let me down. amazon is streaming each episode after it has aired on the telly. when i bought it only trailer available. now episode 1 tst is online as well as more bonus features. amazon just did not explain what it was doing very well or at all. thought i would wait it out till aired on pbs and it did then become avaible online as part of this purchase. already watched it again. one of the absolute best episodes i have seen. cannot hardly wait for 2 and 3.
Aside from Sherlock imagining that Moriarty was behind the early happenings this episode did nothing to further the story arch
regarding Sherlock's nemesis. Instead we again revisit Mary's past activities as a secret agent/assassin for hire. A real stretch
when it comes to an actress, accomplished, but one too old to be convincing as an action figure let alone a new Mother. She
and Martin both would be more convincing as youngish grandparents. I consider this series High Camp; and Killing off major
characters, leaving others bitter and grieving and the detached Sherlock an emotional wreck neither fits the tone nor the tenor
of the series. I'm hoping they can get back on track and recapture the fun and vitality of the previous seasons. But I think they've
lost it.
It was a little too scattered and felt more like fan fiction than the professional writing expected. Hopefully the next few episodes will be better.
I have the first three seasons and the stand alone movie the Abominable Bride. I was really looking forward to this new season, and felt this new episode fell flat on its face. I have noticed both with Sherlock (British) and Elementary (American) the writers are forcing the Sherlock character to be more emotionally in touch with people, and care about them. This is ridiculous. Please stop ruining the Sherlock character. Sherlock would never vow to protect people. Sherlock doesn't care about people. He cares about solving cases, cold, hard reason and that's it. Please restore your character to whom he is supposed to be. And enough with Moriarty already (in Sherlock). For God's sake, move on. Find another villain, explore more cases. Moriarty was a small presence in the books, and once Sherlock dealt with him that's all there was of him. I'm so sick of him in every season as the big bad un-killable villain. I don't miss him at all, but I'm starting to really hate him.
